New Syringa Villosae Group is rising! 2003- December, 30 In the nursery sector a new group of Syringas is rising: the Syringa Villosae Group. In this sector these plants offer good possibilities. For example, they are good assessed as pot plants. Villosae is the group name for the hybrids 'Prestoniae' and 'Josiflexa'. More about the Syringa Villosae Group can be read in this article.
This second part mostly took place at our nursery 't West', in Hazerswoude, Holland. Years of experimenting has lead to an innovative result of growing Syringa Villosae cultivars in pot. In his research, msc. Marco Hoffman, engineer at APR, found some disadvantages compared with the more traditional Syringa Vulgaris. The disadvantages are mainly found in the use as shrub for pulling, but the advantages are of more importance. As a pot plant the Syringa Villosae Group appears to be very suitable and that is just the field we paid a lot attention to at our nursery in the last three years. The fact that this group of Lilacs offers excellent possibilities as pot plant is no news for us. It is something we already knew for years. As well indoors and outdoors people can enjoy the nice flowers of Syringa. For more than three years our nursery is the leader on the auction for Syringa Villosae. Not amazing considering the time and effort it took to develop this innovative product. A growing problem, according to Marco Hoffman and according to our own experience, is that the current classification of cultivars has become disordered as a consequence of unknown descent and determination. The cultivar 'Redwine' for example is sometimes classified under 'Prestoniae' and sometimes under 'Josiflexa'. Together with the International Cultivar Registration Authority of Syringa, in Hamilton (Canada), is chosen for a new classification of these hybrids in a new group 'Villosae', because of the similarity with this botanical series.
